Driving Conditions Could Become Hazardous on Overpasses, Bridges and Rural Roads

TALLAHASSEE – Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) officials urge residents and visitors in the Panhandle and Big Bend region of northern Florida to remain vigilant and use caution on area roadways as a storm system impacts the area through Wednesday, leading to the possibility of freezing rain, sleet or snow across portions of the area.

“A wintry mix of freezing rain and sleet may impact much of the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend Tuesday night into Wednesday morning,” said FDEM Director, Bryan Koon. “Travel on overpasses, bridges and rural roads may become hazardous and we encourage drivers to practice safe driving habits.”

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for Bay, Calhoun, Escambia, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Liberty, Leon, Madison, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Wakulla, Walton, and Washington Counties from Tuesday evening through Wednesday afternoon. A Winter Storm Warning means that there is a potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel. Those traveling are encouraged to check their local forecasts and plan accordingly.

Residents and visitors should also remember the "Five P's" of cold weather safety. The “5 P’s” are: Protecting People, Protecting Plants, Protecting Pets, Protecting Exposed Pipes, and Practicing Fire Safety.

The following actions are important safety measures:

· Stay indoors and use safe heating sources.

· Be aware of the fire danger from space heaters and candles. Keep such devices away from
