WASHINGTON COUNTY - Florida qualifying ended at noon Friday, and there's no shortage of candidates throwing their hats in the ring for local races.

Perhaps the most closely watched race is that of the Washington County Clerk of Court.

Carnette "Keith" Adkinson (REP), Lora Bell (REP), Melissa Whitson (no party affiliation), Peggy Gay (REP), and Steve Whittington (no party affiliation) have all qualified for the seat. Currently, retired Bay County Clerk of Court Harold Bazzel is serving the unexpired term of Linda Cook, who passed away earlier this year. Cook had retired in December due to health problems. Whomever wins the election in November will take the seat immediately to complete the two years remaining on Cook's term.

Final candidates for the District 2 County Commission seat are: Cameron Leigh Cope (DEM), incumbent Joel Pate (REP), and Charles Kent (REP).

District 4 County Commission incumbent Todd Abbott will run unopposed. Jacob Strickland of Chipley filed an intent to run for the seat, but did not complete the qualifying process in time.

All school board seats are unopposed, with Vann Brock (District 1), Terry Ellis (District 4), and Susan Roberts (District 5) all retaining their seats.

This year’s Primary Election is Tuesday, Aug. 26. The General Election will take place Tuesday, Nov. 4.
