Ponce de Leon man dies in Saturday auto accident

BONIFAY — A Ponce de Leon man died Saturday after he lost control of his vehicle while passing another car on State Road 85 in Okaloosa County, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

TaWayne McCaskill, 35, of Ponce de Leon was pronounced dead at the scene after his 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix rolled over several times, partially ejecting McCaskill from the car early Saturday morning.

According to the report, McCaskill was northbound on SR 95 and attempted to pass the 2011 Toyota Van driven by Robert Shay, 72, of Meadeville, Penn. McCaskill’s car struck the side of the van then went out of control, across the grass median and into the southbound lanes where it began rolling over.

McCaskill was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the report.

Shay was wearing his seatbelt and suffered only minor injuries.

The accident is still under investigation, according to the Highway Patrol report.
