WESTVILLE - Community members came in by the dozens to show their support for one of their own, as Pittman Volunteer Fire Department held a Christian Sing Benefit on Aug. 2 to help raise money to help local resident Sharon Harris in her on-going battle against Stage 2 Colon Cancer.
"We wanted to help Mrs. Sharon out by raising money for medical expenses, transportation, food, lodging and co-payments as she travels back and forth to Birmingham, Alabama for treatment," said Chief Alfred Sellers. "I just want to thank everyone for their support."
Entertainment for the evening was Ron French, The Drummonds, Neal and Courtney Reeves and other local talent. Along with entertainment, the fire department sold barbeque plates and held an auction, as well as collected donations. Event emcee was Gary Newell, who said he is available free to all non-profit organizations' fundraising events. For more information, call him at 850-956-2707.
"I never thought there would be this many people," said Harris, choked with emotion and eyes tearing up. "You never know until it happens to you; I only hope that by doing this it will help someone else down the line. Most of these people I've known for 35 years living in Florida and I want you to know they are more like family; we all care for one another here."
