CHIPLEY — A Chipley man was injured Friday, Aug. 9, when his bicycle was struck by a pickup truck on Brickyard Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

David Thomas Pettis, 31, of Chipley was riding his 2010 700DC Denali bicycle westbound on Brickyard Road when he was struck from behind by the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado driven by a 17-year-old male, also of Chipley.

According to the report, the pickup approached the bicyclist and “failed to use due care while approaching,” causing the pickup’s front right to collide with the bicycle.

Pettis was thrown onto the pickup’s windshield, then fell off the pickup’s hood and into the north ditch of Brickyard Road, according to the report.

Pettis was taken to Bay Medical Center with serious injuries, according to the report.

The driver of the pickup was charged with failure to use due care to avoid colliding with a person operating a human-powered vehicle, according to the report.
