CHIPLEY - Washington County is mourning the passing of long-time Clerk of Court Linda Hayes Cook who passed away Friday morning after a long illness.

Cook, who announced her retirement in December 2013 because of health concerns, served in the county office since the mid 80s, beginning as a deputy clerk before being elected as clerk of courts in 1996.

Lora Bell worked as deputy clerk under Cook for more than decade.

"She impacted so many lives in the public," said Bell. "She was the kindest, most caring person you'd ever meet, and anyone who didn't have the opportunity to know her missed a treat."

Bell said Cook was considered a "second mother" to many in the office and looked for ways to help those around her, both in a personal and professional capacity.

"There are not enough words to describe what a fine person she was," said Bell. "It was a blessing to just be around her."

Services for Cook had not been announced at press time.
