BONIFAY — Holmes County Board of County Commissioners called a special session on Friday, March 1 in order to purchase 500 tons of rock to repair county maintained roads after the recent heavy rains and flash floods devastated the roads during the course of the previous week.
BOCC approved to pay Junction City Main for 500 tons of rock at $28 per ton and approved of hiring Wayne Powell to haul the rock for $6.50 per ton.
Commissioner Kenneth Williams said he came in contact with three possible local haulers with one telling him no, the other said he’d get back with him and never did and the last being Powell.
Commissioner Bill Parish inquired about labor, asking if his road crews could work late Friday and some of Friday to help fix the county roads quickly.
“We’ve got roads that are in dire need of repair and soon,” said Parish.
All those present agreed that as long as it stayed within the required procedures that it should be fine to do what is necessary to complete repairs as needed.
While the commissioners were together, Parish asked that they consider a local vender to address the needs of emergency vehicles.
“We had an ambulance down for two days,” said Parish. “One day the ambulance got a flat and went to the shop to get another one, but had to wait an additional day so that it could get balanced. That is unacceptable for an emergency vehicle.”
Williams explained that the county shop had a balancer but there is a part that went out on the equipment and the previous board denied the request to purchase a new part.
“I’m find with the idea of using a local vender for emergency use on emergency vehicles, I just think we should wait until the attorney is present before we take this discussion further,” said Williams.
Parish agreed and requested that the board think on the matter so that it could be further discussed at the next regularly scheduled meeting.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Holmes County Board of County Commissioners is set for 9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 12 at the BOCC Chamber located beside the Holmes County Court House in Bonifay.
