VERNON — Several community events are coming up in Vernon, including a political forum and a veteran’s dinner.

Mayor Michelle Cook told the city council on Monday that the city would host a political forum from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 18 at the Community Center, with the “meet and greet” beginning at 6 p.m.

On Nov. 3 the citywide yard sale will be held, and Cook said people interested in participating should contact her for information.

The council also approved a Veterans Appreciation Dinner, which will be held on Nov. 11 at the Community Center. The tentative time for the dinner to begin is 5 p.m., council member Gwen March said.

On Nov. 22, the city will hold its annual Thanksgiving dinner, beginning at 11 a.m. It will also be held at the Community Center.

Vernon High School Principal Brian Riviere was on hand at the council meeting to discuss the Homecoming parade, which will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday. The board approved of the school using the same route as last year, and Riviere said he would make sure people were onhand to flag traffic off of Highway 79 onto a detour, “even if I have to put one of my teachers out there.”

“We’re really just here because we are concerned with safety,” Riviere said. “We want to make sure everything is safe for our children, especially the elementary school children.”
