BONIFAY – “I’m real happy for our seniors,” said Holmes County Coach Al Simmons after Friday night’s 49-7 Homecoming win over Franklin County. “They won more games this season than the previous three seasons they played in.”
The seniors certainly went out in style as the Blue Devils (3-7) completely dominated the visiting Seahawks (4-6). The Devils held a 42-7 lead at the half after taking a 21-0 lead in the first quarter.
Blue Devil quarterback Jomar Concepcion had another excellent game, capping off the Devils’ 6-play opening drive with a 38-yard completion to Marcus Wood to set up his own 2-yard scoring play to make it 7-0.
Benton’s 71-yard interception return set up freshman Johnathon Williams’ 5-yard run with 5:08 left in the first half, with Cameron Bailey’s kick making it 14-0 Devils.
Timothy Benton made the first of three interceptions to set up Concepcion’s 23-yard touchdown run with 1:11 left in the first quarter to make it 21-0.
Dalin Modican tallied Franklin’s only touchdown on a 27-yard run with 11:12 left in the half, but the Devils answered as Concepcion hit Benton over the middle with a 20-yard touchdown pass with 9:39 left.
Tanner Bryant’s interception set up Concepcion’s next score, a 38-yard run with 6:55 left in the half to make it 35-7, with Concepcion’s 21-yard touhdown pass to Darius Steverson making it 42-7 at the half.
Holmes finished off scoring with 9:33 left in the third quarter as Concepcion hit Wood with a 23-yard scoring pass. Bailey converted his seventh extra point of the night.
Holmes County started 18 underclassmen Friday night and Simmons was pleased to see their progress this season.
“Tonight we played more like Blue Devil football from the past,” he said.
“I couldn’t ask for more from our underclassmen to step it up for our seniors and help up put away the game in such big fashion,” said Concepcion, who played his last football game for Holmes County.
