Two arrested for trying to steal copper wire

Two local men have been arrested for attempting to steal copper wire. The information was received in a press release from Chipley Police Department.

"On Wednesday morning at approximately 1:30 a.m. two individuals from Jackson County broke into the Gulf Power yard," Chipley Police Chief Kevin Crews said in the news release. "The suspects were about to get away with 800 pounds of new copper wire until Officer David Pettis with the Chipley Police Department arrived.

"Once on scene at Gulf Power, Officer Pettis saw two subjects flee on foot into a wooded area. With the assistance of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington County Corrections K-9 tracking team, both suspects were located and arrested.

"These men and their dogs basically tracked these two thieves clear across town. About 4:00am the tracking team got hot on the trail of the thieves between Kate Smith School and PAEC. Officers moved in and made the arrest directly behind PAEC.

"It is very difficult to track people through city settings," Crews said. "What a great job, done well by all."
