'McCullough Homecoming' ends in Chipley loss

CHIPLEY – Legendary Coach Rickey McCullough and his Bainbridge Bearcats had some hairy moments Tuesday night, but the visitors from Georgia came from behind and edged the host Chipley Tigers 75-70.

McCullough has over 600 wins with many of them at Chipley, where the Tigers were a regular contender for the state title and were 2A runner-up in 1988-89. The smaller Tigers gave their former coach a warm welcome, jumping out to a 15-3 first-quarter lead and holding a 28-20 lead well into the second quarter.

The Bearcats chipped away at the lead, finally taking the lead for the first time with 30 seconds left in the first half and going into the locker room up 38-37. The game was close throughout but Bainbridge converted and hit free throws down the stretch to hold off Chipley.

McCullough praised Chipley for a great start. “They shot the ball really, really well,” he said. “Chipley is always a tough place to play. I appreciate them having me back and their program is headed in the right direction.”

Chipley Coach Joel Orlando was pleased with his team’s grit and determination, especially since it is a young team with only one senior. “The fact that they played so hard was most impressive for a young team,” he said.

“Having ‘McCullough Homecoming’ was exciting and fun.”

Markeith Bell and Leon Broxton led Chipley with 15 points each, and A.J. Roulhac had 14. James Lodman led Bainbridge with 20 points, including three layups in a row to open the fourth quarter, and Davario Thomas had 12.

Bainbridge cruised in the JV opener with a 51-15 win. Devon Balkman led Bainbridge with12 points and David Morris led Chipley with 8.

The caption under picture maybe somewhat of an exageration - lendendary. And you should say former best friend.

Sorry K, you're wrong. The parents in Bainbridge do care and I'm sure there is plenty of politics, not as devious as Chipley. Bur Ricky doesn't care. He plays the best and the others sit, bottom line.

im pretty sure it had more to do with a huge pay increase, he was never one to give a dang about politics or what parents thought.

Rusty, you are right. Rickey coached my son several years ago. He was tough and worked the kids extremely hard. I would sit in the stands and listen to other parents curse him because their son wasn't playing. I would get so upset I would have to leave the gym and walk outside. But, Ricky never gave in and did it his way. He didn't care what was said or by whom. He played who he thought was the best five. Way to go Ricky, I still think you are the best basketball coach the coach at CHS.

Ricky is a great coach who should be still coaching here at CHS. But, like others before him and I sure others to come, he just got sick and tired of the politics from the county office and parents who thought they new more about who should play and when.
