Kiwanis Presents 9 Scholarships

CHIPLEY – As a result of fund raising events throughout the past year, Kiwanis presented a total of 9 scholarships last week during the graduation festivities in Washington County.

The Kiwanis scholarships are presented to high school graduates and college students completing their freshman year, and can be used to help with college costs during the first two years of a college education.

Selection is based upon a variety of factors that include grade average, involvement in school and community activities, leadership positions, and a commitment to helping others through community service.

Chipley High School graduates receiving scholarships were Jordan Thomas Rudd, Aja Shavee Finklea, and Allison Marie Marco.  For Vernon High School the scholarship recipient was Allyson Elizabeth Curtright.

Completing their first year at Chipola and receiving a scholarship renewal were Jesse Carter, Chad Davis, Alan Moss, Ethan Solger, and Kayla Stewart.

In Washington County, Kiwanis sponsors youth club activities at the grade school, middle school, and high school levels.  Both Vernon and Chipley high schools have Key Clubs for grades 9 through 12 that select, plan and conduct community service and fund raising projects each school year.

Each club has school faculty advisors that provide strategic guidance, but the intent is for Key Clubs to be 100% student governed and lead.

At the middle school level, the Kiwanis Builders Clubs provide the opportunity for students to fill leadership positions and all members learn to be part of a self-directed organization that makes its plans and brings service and fund raising events to a successful conclusion.

Builders Clubs foster development of a spirit of community service while providing students the opportunities to participate in events they have personally helped to select and plan.

K-Kids is the program for elementary students in over 600 clubs world-wide for ages 6 through 12 years.

These young students are exposed to the personal benefits of community service in a group of their fellow-students to learn that cooperation leads to greater achievements than a single individual.

There are also programs for college age students with an international focus, and programs designed to development leadership through special leader training at all levels.

Students and their parents can learn more about Kiwanis sponsored youth clubs from school counselors, school administrative staff, and teachers, or by contacting the Kiwanis Club members in Washington County.

The Kiwanis Club of Chipley has been providing support to youth oriented events and programs for 68 years and last year supported 36 organizations throughout the county.

Next on the fund raising schedule will be the Annual Golf Tournament and this fall the ever-popular Kiwanis Dinner Theatre.

The club meets Tuesdays at Pattillo’s Restaurant in the middle of the Washington-Holmes County Technical Center (WHTC) at Noon.   For an invitation to lunch, contact any Kiwanian or call Elaine Chadwell, Membership Chairperson, at 258-3142.
