Amendments on the ballot in Bonifay
BONIFAY — The upcoming Bonifay municipal elections will be concerned with more than just electing the mayor and a council member. There are also two amendments to the city charter on the ballot.
A proposed charter amendment for section 3.09 of the city charter provides for election of the chief of police. The charter presently calls for appointment of the chief, but the amendment calls for the following:
•The chief shall be elected to a four-year term with the term beginning on the second Tuesday following the election.
•In the event of a vacancy a chief would be appointed by a majority vote of City Council to fill the remainder of the term. If the vacancy occurs “during or after the normal time to qualify to run for office,” Council shall call a special election.
•The first election would be during the regular 2011 election.
The second charter amendment would be to section 3.02 and would establish term limits for council members. The amendment would limit council members to two consecutive two-year terms in office.
