Final reading of road ordinance

BONIFAY – Bonifay City Council held the final reading and approved Ordinance 365 that established load limits and the permitting process for use of roads.

The ordinance bans vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of 10,000 pounds or more on residential streets where they are posted to prohibit the driving of trucks on those streets, with certain exceptions. Council approved ordering the signs and once they are up the ordinance is in effect.

Council also discussed the Bossert house on East Michigan Avenue that is still badly in need of repair and violates city codes. Councilman Richard Woodham reported that the house needs roof work, air conditioning, new doors, ceiling repairs, has holes in the walls, needs carpet work, needs a sewer lift station, and various appliances.

The City paid about $117,000 to repair the home in an insurance case, and Woodham reported that, “Everything the insurance paid for is gone.” The City has possession of the house and approved taking sealed bids on the house reserving the right to reject all bids. Bids will be opened Jan. 11, 2010.

In other business, Council:

•Agreed to unanimously say no to requests to adjust water payments

•Discussed the fact that people are getting into the recreation center apparently without keys, as well as discussed making more repairs to make the facility more attractive to renters

•Heard Brenda Theroit complain that she was banned from playing bingo at Bonifay Bingo. Mayor James Sims recommended that she contact the state licensing board.

•Heard that the sewer work was headed toward Indiana Avenue and that about 300 feet of pipe has been laid so far

•Heard that plans for the new City Hall roof have been submitted for review
