Bonifay Elementary added to Wings
BONIFAY – The Holmes County School Board approved of Wings 21st Century’s request to amend their funding grant to include Bonifay Elementary School in the Wings program.
This would allow the program to receive additional funding and supply Bonifay Elementary School with benefits of the Wings program. Action was taken at Tuesday’s regular Board meeting.
WINGS - Winning Intellectually and Gaining Safety - is an after-school program that provides a safe, supervised environment for middle school students where they receive a nutritious snack, homework help, enrichment activities, field trips, transportation home four days a week and a summer enrichment program.
"Give Us WINGS - Let Us Fly" is a federally funded 21st Century Community Learning Center Project in the middle grades of three schools in Holmes County, six schools in Jackson and the two middle schools, Roulhac and Vernon Middle, in Washington County.
This three-county program is being administered through the Panhandle Area Educational Consortium (PAEC) in Chipley.
Along with providing services for middle school students, WINGS also offers a community family resource center, parenting sessions, basic technology assistance and extended media center hours.
WINGS collaborates with Literacy Volunteers of America and the adult education center in Holmes, Jackson and Washington County with referrals and common activities. Each middle school within these counties has been opened to the community; families of all WINGS students are invited to come in and participate in the services offered by the WINGS program.

“I want to thank Mrs. West for finding the additional funding for the program,” said Board Member Gary Scott. “And commend the staff for their level of dedication for working with the program with no pay from August to October; they’ve given a lot to help those kids.”
Board Member Rickey Callahan also informed everyone that the Bonifay Elementary School would be holding a Veteran’s Day program Friday, Nov. 6, at 9 a.m.
Board member Vernon Lewis, Jr. wanted to remind everyone that H1N1 vaccines were now available in Holmes County.
