Relay for Life scheduled in Bonifay
BONIFAY – Bonifay City Council approved use of the recreation center for the return of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Action was taken at Monday’s regular Council meeting.
Relay has not been held in Holmes County for several years but the event is planned for April 23 beginning at 6:30 p.m. More information below.
The City’s water project will begin in the next several weeks and the work would require detours. The City’s engineering firm, Hatch Mott McDonald will provide information on the work and detours to the Holmes County Times-Advertiser to run in the paper or online at bonifaynow.com. City grant writer Bob Jones said major work should begin within the next 30 days.
Electrical work at the recreation center is complete with new poles and lights installed. City Supervisor Jack Marrell said that ditch work using FEMA money is underway on Clifford Street and work would begin soon on the culvert in front of City Hall. There may be enough funding to pave in front of City Hall as well.
Council also discussed the City’s cable franchise, MediaCom. Councilwoman Jo Ann Foxworth said that she has received a number of complaints about the service and asked if the City could change cable companies.
Mayor James Sims said that the City could bid out services or buy out MediaCom, but that investigation had been made into replacing the cable service several times in the past but without success. Foxworth said she would look into the issue.
Relay for Life
Relay began in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a surgeon in Tacoma, Washington, ran and walked around a track for 24 hours to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Since then, Relay has grown from a single man’s passion to fight cancer into the world’s largest movement to end the disease.
Each year, more than 3.5 million people in 5,000 communities in the United States, along with additional communities in 20 other countries, gather to take part in this global phenomenon and raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer. Thanks to Relay participants, the American Cancer Society continues to save lives.
