WASHINGTON COUNTY - Washington County Sheriff's Office is warning residents to be careful swiping.
According to a Facebook post, WCSO has received an increased number of reports regarding card skimming - a kind of credit card theft in which a device is placed at the point of sale and fraudulently copies a user's credit card information.
Skimmers often use the information to make unauthorized purchases.
If you suspect your ATM card or credit card has been compromised, WCSO advised the following: notify your financial institution immediately, lock/deactivate any affected cards and file a report with law enforcement.
"It is critical that you monitor your accounts closely," the post stated.
The office also advised no to touch the skimmer and to notify the store or banking institution at the location and then notify law enforcement.
