TAMPA — Floridians are finding long lines at gas stations in the panhandle, as motorists prepare for Hurricane Michael's arrival. The surge in demand has even left some gas stations on empty, but fuel trucks continue running around the clock to meet demand.
"Gasoline outages in the panhandle are spotty, but not widespread," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA - The Auto Club Group. "There continues to be plenty of fuel supply in the state, but getting a tanker truck to a gas station - before it runs out of fuel - can be a challenge during a time of such high demand. State officials say gas trucks will continue making deliveries until winds reach 45 miles per hour, at which time it is deemed unsafe for them to operate."
AAA still does not expect Hurricane Michael to cause a significant increase in prices at the pump. Last year, gas prices spiked 40-50 cents after Hurricane Harvey made landfall along the Gulf Coast, causing shutdowns of both refineries and oil rigs in the region. Hurricane Michael's forecasted track runs well east of most energy infrastructure, abating concerns of any major supply disruption.

State of Emergency - No Price Gouging
A State of Emergency remains in effect for 35 Florida counties: Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, Holmes, Washington, Bay, Jackson, Calhoun, Gulf, Gadsden, Liberty, Franklin, Leon, Wakulla, Jefferson, Madison, Taylor, Columbia, Hamilton, Suwanee, Lafayette, Dixie, Gilchrist, Levy, Citrus, Pasco, Hernando, Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee, Alachua, Union, Bradford and Baker.
The State of Emergency limits the amount a retailer can raise the price on commodities like gasoline. If there is a “gross disparity” between the current price and what the retailer charged during a 30-day period prior to the storm, it is considered “price gouging” and should be reported to the Attorney General’s office via the Price Gouging Hotline at 1-866-966-7226 or online at http://myfloridalegal.com. During the past 30 days, Florida’s average price for a gallon of gasoline ranged from $2.72 - $2.82 per gallon. Check today's daily average price in Florida.
Retailers are able to raise prices if the market dictates (if the price for retailers to obtain the gasoline increases). An example of this would be rising prices of wholesale gasoline due to gains in the stock market. Today, oil and gasoline prices are trading lower on the NYMEX, compared to last week. Meanwhile, wholesale gasoline prices are holding steady.
