BONIFAY – Local resident Betty Shirah was awarded the 2017 Distinguished Volunteer of the Year for her work at the Holmes County Council on Aging.

Shirah, is a 78 year old retired housewife who volunteers more than 50 hours a month. She also acts as receptionist three days a week at the council.

The Area Agency on Aging of North Florida, Aging & Disability Resource Center gave her the award in recognition of her outstanding commitment to serving seniors.

Shirah says she is honored by the award for doing what she loves.

“I love being here and helping wherever I can,” said Shirah. “I enjoy coming here and seeing everyone and I am honored to have received this award.”

Old Americans Act Coordinator for the HCCOA Michael Brown says Shirah is a blessing.

“Miss Betty is always here to help and would do more if we would let her,” said Brown. “She is a blessing to us all.”
