BONIFAY – Some Holmes County students were late for school this morning after their bus was rear-ended during a pick-up stop.
Bus number 58, being driven by Heather May, was stopped to pick up students on Highway 79 just north of Highway 177, with flashing lights activated and the stop arm out as students were boarding the bus.
A 1999 Jeep Cherokee driven by Jason Chitty, 16, of Bonifay was travelling south on Highway 79.
According to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, Chitty failed to keep proper distance and did not stop on time. This caused the Jeep’s front bumper to collide with the rear bumper of the school bus. Chitty was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured.
There were 33 students on board the bus at the time of the accident with no injuries reported.
Alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
Chitty was given a Careless Driving citation.
