VERNON -- A candidate for recreational director was interviewed at Monday's workshop.

Vernon City Council members interviewed Brent Gibson for the recreational director position, which has had high turnover in recent years. Gibson was the only interviewee for the position at the meeting and said his goal, if hired, would be to make sure Vernon's young athletes are retained in the city's sports leagues.

The council also heard from Timothy Garner who requested support for possibly starting a city basketball league.

In other business, a public hearing was held for Ordinance No. 17-217, repealing the existing floodplain management ordinance to adopt a new one that meets Florida Building Code. And a public hearing was held for Ordinance No. 2017-218, which grants Gulf Power Company rights to construct and operate within Vernon.

A regular council meeting will be held 7 p.m. on Dec. 11 at City Hall, 2808 Yellow Jacket Drive.
