CHIPLEY -Chipley City Council approved Tuesday the first reading of an ordinance that would prohibit distribution of tobacco at events.
Backed by Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT), the city council voted unanimously in favor of the first reading of Ordinance No. 947 at Tuesday's regular meeting. The ordinance prohibits the distribution or sampling of tobacco products, including electronic devices, at any public place or event open to the general public.
The council also unanimously approved the purchase of a 2018 Ford Utility Interceptor to outfit the police department's K-9 unit. The motion for the vote also stated that the vehicle will be purchased using federal forfeiture funds.
The council will meet again for a regular workshop on Dec. 7 at City Hall, 1442 Jackson Ave.
