POPLAR SPRINGS - A Poplar Springs man led Holmes County law enforcement officers on a foot chase after deputies attempted to execute an arrest warrant at his residence.
According to reports, investigators went to the residence of Franklin Smith on M.A. Hodges Road Thursday to serve an arrest warrant for Smith on larceny charges.
Deputies encountered Smith at the back door of the home, advised him of the warrant, and asked him to turn around so that he could be handcuffed.
Smith stated, "No" and retreated into the residence, followed by investigators, who began to struggle with Smith in an attempt to place handcuffs on him. HCSO states that once restrained, Smith was escorted outside to await a transport deputy but took off, running down the driveway in an attempt to escape.
Investigators pursued Smith on foot, tackling him and fighting with him once again on the ground until a backup unit could arrive.
During the course of the chase, a Holmes County passed out due to the extreme heat. The deputy was taken to Doctors Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released and is expected to make a full recovery.
Smith faces additional charges of escape, resisting an officer with violence, and battery on a law enforcement officer.
