CHIPLEY - A fire gutted a home in the 3000 block of Douglas Ferry Road Wednesday, displacing an elderly Washington County couple.

Fire Coordinator Rick Kerr reports firefighters responded around 8:24 Wednesday night to find the home fully engulfed in flames.

With the couple at church at the time of the fire, no one was home during the blaze, and no injuries occurred.

5 Points, Wausau, and Vernon fire departments responded, as well as the Bonifay Fire Department, which assisted through a mutual aid agreement between Holmes and Washington Counties.

"The couple actually have grandsons who serve on local fire departments, and they were some of the first to the scene," said Kerr. "The home experienced heavy smoke, fire, and water damage, with the flames seeming to be mostly in the attic area."

The State Fire Marshall's office is investigating, but officials state preliminary evidence points to an electrical issue around the home's breaker box.

The American Red Cross of Northwest Florida was contacted, and volunteers responded with financial assistance to help with temporary lodging and to replace necessities lost in the fire like food, clothing and medications.

Kerr states he will provide an update on the fire within the next few weeks.
