CHIPLEY - After days of weather delays, demolition of the old Kate M. Smith Elementary school officially began at July 2. Washington County School Superintendent Joe Taylor states the demolition should be complete by the end of September.

Washington County School Board members are still in the process of finalizing plans for the old campus, with the tentative idea to keep only the cafeteria and third grade building.

The cafeteria is slated to be used as a conference facility, and the third grade wing will serve as the new Washington County School District Office. Should that happen, the existing office, currently located on Second Street, will house the district’s technology hub, which will be moved from the old Chipley High School campus.

About 14 acres of surplus property from the old campus will also ultimately be listed for sale.
