CHIPLEY - The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has confirmed an investigation into the death of a Northwest Florida Reception Center inmate.
The Florida Department of Corrections requested FDLE investigate after inmate David Arias was killed as the result of an altercation with another inmate at the Washington County facility on Monday.
FDLE spokesperson Jessica Carey says the department is currently not at liberty to give further details.
"This investigation is active and ongoing, and we cannot comment or offer any more information at this time," Carey told the Washington County News on Tuesday.
Neither FDLE nor FDOC would comment on the manner of death, but sources close to the investigation report Arias was stabbed. The name of the other inmate in the altercation has also not been released.
Arias, who would have turned 29 on June 28, was just six years into a 25-year sentence for a 2011 Broward County burglary and assault, accompanied by several concurrent, lesser sentences for a variety of other theft-related convictions, including grand theft and burglaries.
