WEWAHITCHKA - Six prison employees and an inmate were injured Wednesday in what the Florida Department of Corrections described as a “major disturbance” at a Panhandle facility.

Gulf Correctional Institution Annex was placed on lockdown after the Wednesday morning incident. A statement from the Department of Corrections did not detail the circumstances of the disturbance but said it involved “several inmates housed in multiple dorms.” It said the injuries were not life threatening.

Citing unnamed sources, the Miami Herald reported that the violence involved prison gangs.
