UPDATE, 11:21 p.m.: Reports indicate the situation at Holmes Correctional Institute is gradually settling down, with at least three dorms back under control of prison staff. No officers or inmates have been reported injured in the melee at this time. The Florida Department of Corrections Communications Office isn't expected to give a statement on the disturbance until Friday morning. 

UPDATE, 10:21 p.m.: The Holmes County Sheriff's Office has confirmed deputies are helping secure the perimeter at Holmes Correctional Institute as officers from multiple other correctional institutes continue to arrive to assist. Some inmates will be transported to other facilities.

BONIFAY - Multiple sources have confirmed an active riot situation is underway at Holmes Correctional Institute in Bonifay.

The Florida Department of Corrections Communication Office has not yet returned a call for more information, however the Holmes County Times-Advertiser has received reports from multiple sources close to the situation stating an undisclosed number of inmates have barricaded themselves in at least four dorms.

At this time, no officers are believed to be seriously harmed, and other facilities in the area have been activated for assistance.

The action is believed to be part of a nationwide prisoner strike planned for September 9 in observance of the anniversary of the Attica Prison riot that occurred at Attica Correctional Facility in Attica, New York in 1971.
