Findings of 'Hoodlum” or “hoodrat' incident at VHS released

VERNON — Vernon High School’s principal has released her findings and recommendations for discipline in an incident involving the school’s cheerleading coach, a cheerleader and the cheerleader’s cousin and whether the term “hood rat” was used.

“On Tuesday, Dec. 1, an incident happened in they gym lobby between a cheerleader and her cousin,” Vernon Principal McCrary wrote in her report, released last week. “The cousin was teasing the cheerleader by flipping her skirt, the cheerleader hit her and the cousin got her in a choking position with her hands around her neck.”

She reported that this is when cheerleaders coach Amanda Rogers tried to neutralize the situation.

“When the cousin questioned Rogers’ authority, Rogers stated she could leave on her own or she would call the sheriff resource officer,” McCrary wrote. “The athletic director ended up having the cousin leave the gym.”

It was then, McCrary reported, that Rogers stated she had said, “We are not hoodlums, nor should we act like it.

“Others thought they heard her say ‘hood rat;’ half of those interviewed thought they heard ‘hood rat’ and half did not hear that term,” McCrary wrote. “A parent of another teacher was the first person to report to me about the incident and explained that ‘hood rat’ means dirty and from the ghetto.”

From the interview alone, she explained there could be no determination as to which word was used.

“However, the whole incident, including the acting out of the cheerleader and her cousin, the unprofessional language … used by Rogers, and the anger that she displayed in this incident, was inappropriate,” she wrote.

McCrary wrote that Rogers said “everyone needs respect. I backed you into a corner and caused you to be upset; if I had called you to the side, this would not have happened.

“Rogers has done an outstanding job with coaching the cheerleaders, and I hear compliments on them wherever I go,” she wrote. “They are well-disciplined and make Vernon High School proud with the way they handle themselves.”

Rogers faces disciplinary action such as supervision by the principal and annual evaluations.

McCrary said the gym incident was “an isolated one and should not have happened.”

“Tempers flared and words were said that should not have been said; it has not been verified that ‘hood rat’ was said or not said,” she wrote. “I do feel that disciplinary action is necessary.”

Sandra Cook, superintendent of Washington County Schools, said she felt relieved the matter was resolved.

“I believe all the parties involved have learned from this process,” Cook said. “It’s been a learning experience for both students and teachers, and I believe we’re all a little better equipped now.”

Recommendations of disciplinary action

•Amanda Rogers will be supervised by the principal, not the athletic director.

•When a discipline problem occurs with the cheerleaders, Rogers will discuss it with the principal before making a judgment or decision on the disciplinary action.

•Both Rogers and the principal will collaborate on the decision.

•Shouting matches and confrontations between Rogers and students should not occur and disciplinary actions should not happen in busy corridors or lobbies where people and community members are congregated. A quiet place where both parties can discuss the problem should be used.

•The Code of Ethics for the Education Profession is attached. The principal and Rogers will discuss these and it shall become part of the coach’s responsibility to follow.

•Rogers will submit a monthly calendar of cheerleading activities to the principal at the beginning of each month.

•Rogers will be evaluated annually by the principal and that report will become part of the coach’s record.

•A copy of this report with the above recommendations will be placed in Rogers’ personnel file.

It takes one to know one. Maybe she has some past experience?

Yes this is the Coach's wife and if she didn't have a tainted reputation before entering this school she may have some respect from the students. IT's seems she didn't go to the principal when this happend, better to call hubby I guess. I would get rid of her. No child of mine will attend where her or her husband coach.

Everyone seems to be questioning the superindentent. Did anyway ever consider that maybe there is more to this story and this coach?

When you elect a Superintendent who has zero administrative experience, you will get decisions that are opinions not sound judgement. Sandra Cook was only a fair teacher so what makes you think she will be a successful Superintendent? You can have all the Phd's in the world but that doesn't mean you can be do things you have never experienced.

Teachers have much responsibility with no real authority. It is unfair and does not help anyone. Especially the students. All authority has been taken from them in an effort to be politically correct. A terrible situation, really. It is my opinion that school is so important that it should be treated as very special by students, parents, and teachers, anyone who is disruptive and is not there to learn should not be allowed to attend, careful attention should be given to the hiring of teachers, and once they are teachers they should receive the respect that should come with the job. I guarantee you that if these standards were upheld more parents would have their children in the right frame of mind for school. And our entire country would be better for it.

Amen to those that support paddling in school! That is one of several "wrongs" with the school system today. Teachers have NO power in the classroom. They are disrespected and are tired and afraid to do anything about it because of retaliation from "parents" that have entirely too much time on their hands. I NEVER thought I would see things come to this point in Washington Co. of all places. School board better take head and rethink some of their policies or teachers are going to get tired of this. I am a parent and am already tired of it. WAKE UP conservatives and vote out all the current "administration" who are afraid to support what is RIGHT. If your kids are fighting, then THEY ARE HOODLUMS and they need their BUTTS WHIPPED. GET OVER IT! Support teachers and coaches like Ms. Rogers. IF it were YOUR child getting "beat up", don't you want someone like Coach Rogers, who is not afraid to intervine and call it as SHE sees it.

I'm sorry I thought that the adults were in charge when according to this story it is obvious that the students call the shots. What in the world happened to good old fashion paddlings I know when i was in school 15 years ago that if one of us had the galls to stand up to a teacher that would have been it parents would have been called and the whoopings would have commenced. Where is Calvin Stevenson when you need him. I knew that Susan Roberts should have been our choice for us and I know that she would never stand for a student disrespecting a teacher EVER. Can't wait for election time, I know where my vote will not go!

Can't believe I read stories from my hometown that sound like stories from some God-forsaken town. Stop being so PC. it was only 10 years ago I was in high school in Holmes County, and I promise you backtalking to any authority figure would not have been stood for at school, and I would've got it even WORSE when I got home. Shame on the students for the disrespectfullness.

No superintendent has been able to please everyone. I don't see Sandra Cook doing any worse than anyone else. Unless you have sat in that seat, your comments are worthless.

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, then how the heck are we supposed to blame someone if they call it a duck.

I would commend the sponsor for dealing with the incident. The stipend that coach's recieve is not worth this type of aggravation. let someone that is willing to be Mrs. Mcrary's puppet do the job and see how they like it!

If the children had a little respect for the adults in this situation, it would not be a problem. I guess I was brought up a lot diffrent than the ones today. I always thought when you got in trouble you took your scolding and went on with your business, NOT TALK BACK OR QUESTION AUTHORITY! I know I would have eaten my teeth once my mom or dad found out that I had questioned an adult. Oh, yeah I have also read all the comments and no where I have seen anyone say anything about race or made it a racial thing until concerned, commented. So how is it such a racial situation? Maybe you should let her say something to a caucasion child and see what happens before YOU make it a racial thing from now on.

I don't understand how a person can be "African American" if they did not come from Africa. My ancesters came from Ireland but I am not refered to as Irish American. Yes, I have a lot of free time, maybe you are jealous of that.

First there was no fight so the first comment made no sense. The cheerleader was just talking with her cousin and they were joking around. She didn't choke her she put her hands around her neck as if she was playing around. Everyone isn't so serious these days. The coach handled the situation in a wrong way. No one deserves to be called out of there name. This isn't the first time she has referred to African American students in that way. It has happened before and no action was done. She has called students monkeys which offended the students. It seems as though race is playing a part in this because if the student was caucasian and called an offensive name then the situation would have been handled differently. Something should be done about her but obviously she will keep her job being that her husband is over the athletic department. That's how she got her job. Seems as though the Coach and wife can do anything they like and get away with it.

Everyone posting concerning this incident is dead on. I will call your attention to the second bulletted recommendation, 'When a discipline problem occurs with the cheerleaders, Rogers will discuss it with the principal.' As I understand the story, one of the students was being choked. Now, when, I ask should the coach contact the principal, after the kid has passed out, or before, hoping that when she calls for assistance, the child is not choked to death. Washington County administrators, get a grip. Stop trying to be so politically correct. The kids fought, the teacher broke it up. So what if she said they should not act like hoodlums or hood rats or whatever. Technically, she did not call them names, just compared their actions to that of unsavory characters, which they were. This is just as bad as The Yearling debacle. That novel is wonderful. It won the 1939 Pulitzer Prize. Do not sacrifice a well-rounded education for the sake of a few complaining individuals. This is not a communist country. We do not ban books. And, the last I checked, our Republic is based on majority rules. You are falling into the trap of an opinionated minority that would not know good literature if it slapped them in the face. Again, just for political correctness, what a shame.

first of all,as the story reads, she didn't call anyone any names. secondly are you really comparing 'hoodlum' to 'hood rat'? Some people really have too much time on their hands. How petty can you get?
