Miller statement on Obama address

U.S. Rep. Jeff Miller (R-FL-1) issued the following statement in response to President Obama’s State of the Union Address:

“President Obama had a rare opportunity to address the missteps of the last year and outline a path to prosperity with a plan to create jobs, slash out-of-control government spending, and bolster the economy.  Instead, President Obama gave an election year campaign speech.  The speech was eloquent and energetic, but it was long on empty promises and short on solutions for working American families and small businesses.

Instead of owning the crisis, the President decided to use a sizeable portion of his speech to blame others for the problems with the economy and the War on Terror.

Of particular interest was the President’s proposal to ‘freeze’ government spending.  I wish he would have clarified if the freeze on spending was supposed to occur before the passage of the Democrats’ trillion dollar health care legislation or after.

The time to freeze government spending has long since passed.  To right this economy we need to cut government spending.  We need to move towards a balanced budget, and this government needs to stop mortgaging the future of our children and grandchildren.”
