VES Back to School
Vernon Elementary School is back into full swing. Students arrived Monday, August 18th ready to dive in to those Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies books.
Many of the VES classes had exciting activities this week. Mrs. Howell’s Pre-K Class learned about the jungle emphasizing on their furry friend, the monkey. They spent the week learning songs like “Five Little Monkeys” and reading stories like, “No More Monkeys Jumping on the Bed.” On Friday, the students made a healthy snack that looked like monkey faces—made from an oatmeal cookie, peanut butter, raisins, and (a monkey’s favorite) bananas.
The Pre-K students gave their treats to their favorite administrators, Mrs. Cadwell (VES Principal), Mrs. Burdeshaw
(VES Assistant Principal), as well as Mr. Joe Taylor (Washington County Maintenance Director).
Across the path, in Mrs. McKinney’s class, students learned about ecosystems in their science lessons. They learned that all animals needed water, shelter, and food in order to survive. They also learned that in an ecosystem there are both living and non-living things that live interdependently—they need each other in order to survive.
On Friday, they made a terrarium for a lizard friend. They collected dirt, grass, pinecones, and branches to make their lizard a comfortable ecosystem all its own. They also placed water and food in the terrarium to insure that the lizard’s needs were met.
