Glades Day School takes Class 1B football title

ORLANDO (AP) — Kelvin Taylor, son of NFL running back Fred Taylor, rushed for 213 yards and four touchdowns to lead Glades Day School to a 27-20 overtime win over Warner Christian Academy in Friday’s Class 1B football championship at the Citrus Bowl.

Taylor’s last score came on a three-yard run in overtime. Warner Christian (12-2) had a chance to answer and either tie or win it, but was intercepted near the goal line on second down by Gators defensive back J.T. Thornton.

Taylor, a 5-foot, 208-pound freshman, did his damage on 42 punishing carries, none of which went for longer than 21 yards. In Glades Day’s three previous postseason games, he rushed for 945 yards and 15 touchdowns.

The title is the sixth for Glades Day (12-2), the last coming in 2006. The school is located in Belle Glade. Warner Christian is in South Daytona.

Warner Christian fell behind by seven on Taylor’s third TD, a 1-yard run with 3:39 left, but sent the game to overtime with a dazzling hook-and-ladder with 2:01 remaining. On the play, quarterback Shelton Willis hit Rashad Greene with a short pass, and he pitched to Sharod Williams, who went 61 yards for the touchdown.
