Arnold notches marquee win over county rival Bay
Marlins ran away with victory
PANAMA CITY - The breakthrough wasn't so much a statement as a foregone conclusion. The outcome in Arnold's 49-21 win over Bay Friday night at Tommy Oliver Stadium was decided by halftime.
Therefore the postgame celebration of the Marlins' first victory over the Tornadoes was subdued. The series only is in its fourth game, so it wasn't as if there were decades of frustration to release.
Instead, it was more a veteran team starting its season 1-0, and a young one in Bay opening 0-1.
Arnold featured its experienced offensive line, eschewing the option attack of the Veer offense for a between-the-tackles lesson in smashmouth football.
"We were going to run at them and eliminate their speed," Arnold coach James Hale said. "We played great for two quarters. I'm disappointed we didn't finish the game as well.
"When we were up 35-7 (at halftime) those Bay kids really got back in it. But in that first half we played about as good as we can play."
Junior running back Jeremy Hester rushed for 141 yards, added a 90-yard kickoff return and scored four touchdowns to pace the Marlins. It was their relentless ground game, however, that gained 308 yards and produced the story line.
For that, interior linemen Ryan Johnson, Will Bruce, Cole Wheaton, Chris Gipson, Sean Frohlich and tight end Kevin Bolter deserved a game ball cut into six pieces.
Quarterback Johnny Gray directed a flawless first-half attack, and also scored twice, and running back Chris Jackson added 83 yards and a TD as all of Arnold's skill players contributed.
Bay countered with an 80-yard march to its first touchdown of the season. Brothers Daniel Husum (quarterback) and Kevin Husum (receiver) connected three times for 77 of those yards. Nick Gurley ran in a sweep on fourth-and-goal from the 5.
Hester took the ensuing kickoff back 90 yards and Bay stumbled to get to halftime. The Marlins tacked on two more touchdowns and the outcome was settled.
The Tornadoes did score twice in the third quarter, an 8-yard toss from Daniel Husum to DeAndre Richardson and a 3-yard run by Gurley. Gray and Hester each scored in the final quarter to put a punctuation mark on the victory.
"They're a senior team and very physical," Bay coach Mike Healey said. "We made a few changes and had a good third quarter, but like I've said, this is a young team that's still learning."
Tracy Craft led the Tornadoes with 68 yards rushing and Daniel Husum passed for 93 yards.
