Not treated fairly
During all the years that I have been living in Washington County, I have been required to obtain a building permit, septic permit, electrical permit, driveway permit, 911 address, etc. in order to have electricity turned on at my property.
It has been brought to the attention of the building department that a gentleman in Washington County built a cabin in the flood plain in 2004. Somehow, this individual was able to obtain a well, electricity and a septic system without permits. Now it is my understanding that the building inspector must be the one to call the electric company with the final permission to turn lights on. However, once again, the good ole boy network comes into play, where some individuals are not required to do as the rest of us. When asked to produce the permits, the individual was not able to do so. Therefore, the building department said "Oh well" he doesn't have to have one.
The only county office willing to do anything was the septic department. Mr. Joe Miner has been very helpful with the situation. Since the individual mentioned above was not able to produce any permits, Mr. Miner required he either bring the current system up to date, or he would have to fill it in.
I also contacted West Florida Electric about the situation, but since this gentleman is on their board of director, they also are not willing to do anything about the situation.
For all of you tax payers in Washington County, just try doing what this individual has and see if you can get electricity, or if you will be able to build a house in the flood plain with no permit.
I hope the readers will contact their county commissioner with their concerns about not being treated fairly. The commissioners are aware of whom this individual is, because they were also contacted about this.
