19-year-old driver dies in crash, passerby arrested for DUI

HOLMES COUNTY – A 19-year-old man died after losing control of his car and crashing into a tree Tuesday afternoon, according to a Florida Highway Patrol media release.

James B. Kilgore, of DeFuniak Springs, was driving his 2006 Nissan Altima on County 177A around 2 p.m. Tuesday when he drifted onto the shoulder, according to the release.

The car went out of control and spun around.

It crashed into a wooden fence, several small trees and a large oak tree.

Kilgore died from the crash and was taken to the Panama City Medical Examiner’s Office, the release said.

A passenger, 19-year-old Brandon C. Joiner of Enterprise, Ala., suffered serious injuries and was taken to Bay Medical Center.

Both men were wearing seatbelts.

It is not yet known if alcohol was involved in the crash.

Charges are pending further investigation.

While troopers investigated the scene, an intoxicated driver of a golf cart drove up “just to look at the crash,” according to the FHP.

The man was arrested for DUI and booked into the Holmes County Jail.
