Buckets of Blessings

DEFUNIAK SPRINGS — The Kiwanis Club of DeFuniak Springs has  been hard at work, promoting it’s Haiti Relief Service Project, named Buckets of Blessings.  The community has responded, and the Kiwanis Club has surpassed its goal of 100 buckets of relief and medical supplies that are scheduled for delivery to the people of Haiti by the end of February.

100 five gallon buckets were donated by Ace Hardware and Lowe’s Home Improvement. The buckets were then made available for adoption to be filled with either food and supply items for families or medical supplies for those providing first aid treatment to the injured.  Community members, organizations and businesses then donated $30 for Family Buckets or $50 for medical team buckets.  In less than two weeks, enough funds/supplies were raise to fill over 120 buckets.

Storage space was provided by A1-Mini Storage, and Chelco provided its Disaster Relief enclosed trailer to transport the supplies to Alexandria, Louisiana on February 12th where they will board a plane to Haiti.

On February 11, 2010 beginning at 3:30pm volunteers from the Kiwanis Club will join together at A-1 Mini Storage, located at 1154 Us Highway 90 West in DeFuniak Springs, Florida to package the containers and load for transport.  The media is welcomed and encouraged to attend.

To insure delivery and accountability the Kiwanis Club partnered with Compassion Services International who has been operating in Haiti for over 15 years.

Compassion Services International was organized as a Christian relief and development service provider dedicated to providing emergency relief during, or in the aftermath, of disasters. By reaching out to the hungry, destitute, sick, and the unfortunate, they are able to show the world something of God's love. This program of relief was instituted to help in a practical way to compliment that love.

Kiwanis Club President Cory Godwin stated “Once again the community of DeFuniak Springs and the surrounding area has demonstrated its care, compassion and concern for others in need, by quickly responding to the needs of our fellow human beings.”

“I’m looking forward to the privilege of personally escorting these containers to Alexandria along with our project coordinator Jonathan King, on behalf of our neighbors”, said Godwin.
