Fires in Holmes County

BONIFAY — It was a busy few days for local firefighters as once again multiple structure fires flared up throughout Holmes County.

On Sunday, March 7, Holmes County Communications Center received a 911 call at 7:58 am reporting a structure fire on Old Liberty School Road approximately five miles from Bonifay, according to a news release from Bonifay Fire-Rescue. At 8:02 am, Bonifay Fire-Rescue's Engine 1, Pumper 1 and Tanker 1 responded with 9 firefighters. Pumper 1 arrived on scene at 8:08 am to find a single story brick residential structure, approximately 1700 square feet, fully involved.

Upon arrival, Fire 1 advised all units that all occupants were out of the house and accounted for. An aggressive exterior attack began with two 1-1/2" handlines near the front of the structure. Esto Fire Department was also on scene later for water support. Once the fire was contained, overhaul began at 8:45 am. The home was a total loss and a representive from the Holmes County Firefighter Association Chaplain Corps. was on scene making arrangements for the family with Red Cross.

Bonifay Fire-Rescue had a total of 14 firefighters on scene and used approximately 5,000 gallons of water to extinguish the home completely. Holmes County EMS and Holmes County Sheriff's Office were on scene as well. All Station 1 units were released from the scene by Fire 1 at 10:09 am. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the State Fire Marshal's Office.

The family of four escaped without injuries. The Red Cross assisted the victims of this fire with temporary lodging, food and clothing. The Thomas family is staying with relatives locally.

Just before midnight Friday, several fire departments were dispatched to a two-story home off Red Road in the Ponce de Leon/Westville area. The home was fully involved and was “on the ground” when firefighters arrived, according to Holmes County Ministerial Association President, the Rev. Charles Newman.

The home, owned by the West family on 2405 Tram Road was a total loss. At least two vehicles were also damaged by the fire. The family of four was not at home at the time of the fire. Fire marshals were called to the scene but were unable to determine the cause of the fire.

The Central Panhandle Chapter Red Cross was able to assist the family with food and clothing. The family is staying with relatives locally, Newman said.

“If you would like to help either of these families, please contact the American Red Cross Central Panhandle Chapter at (850) 763-6587 or your local Holmes County Ministerial Association at (850) 547-5170,” Newman said.
