Doris Cleveland
On the evening of October 1, 2007, at the Washington Rehab & Nursing
Center in Chipley, CLEVELAND, DORIS JEAN WELBORN, age 84,
passed from this life to be with Jesus Christ, her Savior.
Homebound many years, she was most recently a resident at the
Nursing Center. Mrs. Cleveland loved First Baptist Church where
she was a member and welcomed church staff, friends and
neighbors in her home. Prior to becoming homebound, she served
in the nursery and was secretary in her Sunday School class. She
retired in 1987 from Sunland Training Center in Marianna after 14
years of service where she worked as a Training Instructor. She
worked at Head Start as a teacher’s aide and had a variety of jobs
over the years. Mrs. Cleveland was born in Hart County, Georgia
in 1923. She was preceded in death by her husband slain police
officer Hugh Dorsey Cleveland, 1951; her siblings, Faye Welborn
Bobo and Mack Welborn; a special grandson, Kevin Williams. Mrs.
Cleveland is survived by her sons, Hugh E. Cleveland (Mary) of
Cantonment, and Thomas E. Cleveland of Brunswick, Ga.; daughters,
Camellia C. Williams of Pensacola, Patricia J. Cleveland of Morris, Al.,
and Jan C. Morris of Hartwell, Ga. & “adopted daughter”, Judy A.
Taylor, Morris, Al.; step children ( of Hugh) Mickey Hornsby (Beverly),
Cindy Cascone (Paul), Randy Hornsby (Lynn) all of Cantonment;
grandchildren, Lee Morris, Kelley Drew, Linda Andrews, Renea
Stephens, Lauren Cleveland, Lacey Cleveland; great grandchildren;
nieces and nephews.
Visitation and funeral services were held at First Baptist Church,
Chipley, October 3rd. Burial was in Elmhurst Northside Cemetery,
Elberton, Ga., October 5th, next to her beloved husband.
The Elberton, Georgia Police Department staff ministered to the family
through a loving graveside service.
The family requests that memorials be made in Mrs. Cleveland’s

The family extends heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the
following for all their excellent care and support of Mrs. Cleveland
over the years: Washington County Council on Aging, nursing
agencies, most recently NHC Home Care; Florida Division of
Blind Services, Washington County Ambulance, Chipley Police,
post office mail carriers, neighbors, Pastor Michael Orr of First
Baptist Church and its homebound ministry including visits, meals,
cards, gifts; Tri County Community Council, Piggly Wiggly
grocery, King’s Discount Drugs, Dr. and Mrs. James Clemmons,
Mrs. Cleveland’s former roommate Mrs. Gloria Jackson and her
family; Minister Steven Bell, Dot Ross, her long time beautician,
and Marguerite Anderson, private duty nursing assistant.
The family will always remember your unselfish dedication and
the distinct role each of you played in the care and concern for
Mrs. Cleveland.
A very special thank you to the entire caring staff at Washington
Rehab & Nursing Center and Covenant Hospice. You remain like
extended family and the diligent support/care services you
provided gave us peace of mind. Always smiling, always giving a
special touch which meant more than you’ll ever know to our
mother and to us as well. God bless you all as you continue to
minister to others.
