Obituaries 10-3-7

Lifton Robinson

Lifton Robinson, 66, of Chipley died Sept. 5 at Washington Rehab and Nursing Center in Chipley. He was a Washington County native and was of the Baptist faith.

Robinson was a graduate of the Roulhac High School class of 1959. A former bank courier, he also had been a heavy equipment operator.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Doris Alice Robinson of Chipley; three daughters and sons-in-law, Lucretia and Cyril Clark of Miami, Carla and Oteh Ojiogo of Houston, Texas, Vonda and Kay and Greg Kennedy of Chipley; three sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and LaRhonda Robinson of Chipley, Lifton and Serena Robinson Jr. of Graceville, Stephen and Marla Hunter of New Jersey; a god son, Jeremy Merriel; sister, Dianna Eugene Smith of Chipley; 12 grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral was held Sept. 8 at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church in Chipley with Dr. H.G. McCollough officiating.

Burial was in the Northside Cemetery in Chipley with Cooper Funeral Home of Chipley directing.

Maggie Andrews

Maggie Andrews, 80, of DeFuniak Springs died Sept. 22 at her home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Leslie Andrews, and a son, Wayne Andrews.

Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Linda Andrews of DeFuniak Springs, Ebbie Dean and Katherine Andrews of West Palm Beach, Alvin and Raynette Andrews of Windsor, Va., Darrel and Darla Andrews of Monticello; two daughters, Renee Alexander of Arizona and Sheila Andrews of DeFuniak Springs; 22 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held 3 p.m. Sept. 29 at Bonifay Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses with Elder Scott Hatton officiating.

Davis-Watkins Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements and services.

Louis Thomas

Louis Thomas, 95, of Chipley died Sept. 17 in Washington Rehab and Nursing Center in Chipley. A native of Brewton, Ala., he had lived in Washington County most of his life.

Thomas was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church in Chipley, where he served as a deacon.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Eddie Lee Thomas of Chipley; three sons, Leo Thomas, Joe Louis Thomas and Willie James Thomas; a stepson, Wooten McCoy, all of Chipley; four grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral was conducted Sept. 22 at Jerusalem Baptist Church in Chipley with the Rev. Price Wilson officiating.

Burial was in Northside Cemetery in Chipley with Cooper Funeral Home of Chipley directing.

Alvin Carswell

Alvin Carswell, 82, of Chipley died Sept. 12 at Flowers Hospital in Dothan, Ala. He was a native of Crestview but had lived in Washington County most of his life.

A retired truck driver for Van Horn Company, he was a bird watcher and a musician, playing the guitar and harmonica. He was of the Christian faith and was a member of the House of Prayer Worship Center in Chipley.

Survivors include two daughters, Bettie McKinnie of Chipley and Jean Register of Fort Pierce; a brother, Howard Carswell Sr. of Chipley, 14 grandchildren 25 great-grandchildren, 32 great-great-grandchildren and many other relatives.

Funeral was held Sept. 15 at the House of Prayer Worship Center in Chipley with the pastor, Anthony B. McKinnie, officiating.

Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery in Chipley with Cooper Funeral Home of Chipley directing.

Mary Mongoven

Mary Weeks Mongoven, 82, died Sept. 21 at her home. She was born Sept. 8, 1925, in Cornish, Maine, to the late Ernest and Augusta Weeks.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Gene and Don Weeks.

Mary was a homemaker and was active in the Chipley community and was an active member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. She was a member of the Woman's Club.

She worked with her husband during his years of practicing law. Her favorite past time was playing bridge with good friends and taking a trip of Las Vegas or Biloxi with her husband. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, William J. Mongoven; one daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Thomas Eldridge; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Tim and Marsha Mongoven, Mickey and Ginger Mongoven, Barry and Cecilia Mongoven and Donnie Mongoven; two brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law, and a host of nieces and nephews; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral was held Sept. 25 at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Chipley with Father Sean Knox officiating.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Sunny Hills with Brown Funeral Home of Chipley directing.

Frances Pilcher

Frances Daffin Pilcher, 98, of Marianna died Sept. 21 at Marianna Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was a native of Jackson County.

Pilcher was a former employee of Jackson Packing Company and a devoted home health care worker.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Marvin Talley, Omer Chatwood and Frank Pilcher; her parents, W.R. Daffin Sr. and Netia "Big Mama" Hightower; five brothers, J.B., Buster, Charlie, Joe and Hooks Daffin, and five sisters, Marie McBride, Edna Luster, Annette Standland, Grace Bethea and Margaret Bass.

Survivors include three sons, Herbert Talley and wife, Annie, of Tallahassee, Charles Talley of Bascom, and Gerald Chatwood and wife, Grace, of Marianna; a daughter, Mary Frances Hale of Auburn, Calif.; 14 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral was held Sept. 24 at Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. Roland Rabon officiating.

Burial was in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home, Maddox Chapel, directing.

Clara N. Provost

Clara Nell Provost, 71, of the Rocky Creek community in Marianna, died Sept. 22 in Dothan, Ala. She was a native and life-long resident of Jackson County, and was a retired Certified Nursing Assistant. She was a member of Cypress Community Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Dollie Mears Owens.

Surviving are a daughter, Marian Gray; and a granddaughter, both of Marianna; three brothers, David Owens of Bristol, James Ben Owens of Blountstown, Johnny Wayne Owens of Grand Ridge; a sister, Margie Johnson of Chattahoochee; two special friends, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral was held Sept. 25 at Cypress Community Church with the Rev. Jerry Mears officiating.

Burial was in Shady Grove Cemetery with James and Sikes Funeral Home, Maddox Chapel, directing.

Carlton Greenwood

Carlton Eugene "Gene" Greenwood, 71, of Campbellton died Sept. 20. He was born in Coffee County, Ala., Jan 17, 1936, to the late Louie and Cola Stanton Greenwood.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and was retired from Colonial Baking Company following 23 years. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Campbellton. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Fay Greenwood of Campbellton; three children, Michael Greenwood and wife, Ann, of Cottonwood, Ala.; Karen Harrison and husband, Darrell, of Marianna, Scottie Greenwood and wife, Shelly, of Graceville; four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral was held Sept. 23 at First Baptist Church of Campbellton with the Revs. Gene Gainous and Luther Pumphrey officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery with military honors conducted by Sneads American Legion Post 241, and James & Lipford Funeral Home of Graceville directing.

James C. Phipps

James Christopher Linwood Phipps, infant son of James and Holly Phipps of Bonifay, died Sept. 18 at USA Children's and Women's Center in Mobile, Ala.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandparents, Mike and Cynthia Pettis of Bonifay, Walter and Kathy Phipps; his great-grandparents, Charles A. and Mary Fay Pettis of Bonifay; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

A graveside funeral service was held Sept. 20 in Carmel Cemetery with the Rev. Tommy Moore officiating and Sims Funeral Home of Bonifay directing.

Barbara Elrod

Barbara Claire (Chew) Elrod, 65, of Bonifay died Sept. 15 at Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan, Ala. She was the daughter of the late Lawrence Chew and the late Alpharetta (Potts) Chew.

Survivors include her husband, Carl T. Elrod and one son, Carl T. Elrod II, both of Bonifay; one sister, Maureen Marcirella of Miami; one brother, Gary Chew of Bonifay, and two grandchildren.

Memorialization was by cremation. Memorial services were held Sept. 22 at Winterville Assembly of God with Sims Funeral Home of Bonifay directing.

Bena Finch

Bena Finch, 94, died Sept. 23 in Crestview. She was born May 12, 1913, in Wausau and had lived there until she moved to Laurel Hill to be with her daughter, Frances Adams.

Bena and her husband, Douglas Finch, owned a farm just south of Wausau. She loved to fish in the Sand Hills ponds and was known as an expert angler by all her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a grandson and a great-grandson.

Survivors include one son, Bernice and wife, Gerry Finch of Wausau; three daughters, Minnie P. Galloway of Wausau; Frances Adams and husband, Bobby, of Laurel Hill, Julie Snook and husband, Larry, of Navarre, nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sept. 26 in the funeral home chapel with the Revs. John Kelly, Carlos Finch and Buford Carter officiating.

Burial was in Gap Pond Cemetery with Brown Funeral Home of Chipley directing.

James Smith

James Peter Smith, 27, of Chipley died Sept. 21 in Chipley. He was born July 15, 1980, in Marianna to James A. and Leisa (Stanton) Smith.

Survivors include his parents, James and Leisa Smith, of Chipley.

Memorialzation was by cremation. A memorial service was held Sept. 28 in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Gary Wiggins officiating, and Brown Funeral Home of Chipley directing.

James Merritt

James E. Merritt, 67, of Marianna died Sept. 23 at his home.

Funeral service was held Sept. 26 at Maddox Chapel in Marianna.

Burial followed at Florida National Cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home, Maddox Chapel, officiating.

Paul Krouse

Paul S. Krouse, 72, of Bonifay died Sept. 23 at Northwest Florida Community Hospital in Chipley. He was born in Pennsylvania.

A retired carpenter and commercial fisherman, he had been residing at Dogwood Inn in Bonifay for the past four years. He was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.

Survivors include his children, David Krouse and wife, Maria, of Chipley, Charles Keen and wife, Ovaline of Panama City, Cathy York and husband, William, of Bonifay and Sandra Gail Krouse of Virginia Beach, Va.; a sister, Phyllis Overdroff of Indiana, Pa.; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral was held Sept. 28 at the Tabernacle of Praise in Chipley with the Rev. Victor Fisher officiating and James & Lipford Funeral Home of Graceville directing.

Frank Mackus

Frank Mackus, 54, of Maspeth, N.Y., died Sept. 20 in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was born in Ridgewood, N.Y., to Peter and Dorothy (Novak) Mackus.

Survivors include his mother, Dorothy Mackus of Sunny Hills; and three brothers, Richard J. Mackus of Maspeth, Edward Mackus of Ozone Park, N.Y., and Pewter Mackus of Quakerstown, Pa.

Funeral was held Sept. 26 at St. Theresa Catholic Church with Monsignor Francis Szczykutowicz officiating.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery with Brown Funeral Home of Chipley directing.

Lucas S. Bennett

Lucas Sterlin Bennett, 21, of Caryville died Sept. 23 at Bay Medical Center in Panama City. He was born July 11, 1986, in Panama City.

Survivors include his mother, Cynthia Ann Clemmons, and father, Curtis Bennett, both of Bonifay; guardians, Bobby and Glenda Hawkins of Caryville; two brothers, Kyle Griffin and Clayton Griffin, also of Caryville.

Memorialization was by cremation with arrangements by Peel Funeral Home of Bonifay.

Edna Ruth Gray

Edna Ruth Russell Gray, 94, of Marianna died Sept. 24 at her residence. She was born July 17, 1913, in Marianna, second child of Charles Edward Russell and the former Annie Louise Kent.

Gray received her AA degree from Chipola Junior College and was retired from Florida Department of Human Resources. She was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Marianna for 82 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louie Minch Gray of Pensacola, whom she married April 25, 1937; and two sisters, Martha Roberts and Frances Konopacka.

Survivors include one son, James Russell Gray and wife, Nancy, of Lawrenceville, Ga.; one daughter, Janet Gray Stephenson and husband, Charles Judson, of Marianna; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral was held Sept. 27 in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church of Marianna with Dr. Bob McKibben officiating.

Burial was in Riverside Cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home, Maddox Chapel, directing.

Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church (for World Hunger Relief Fund) 2901 Caledonia Street, Marianna, FL 32446.

Ida R. Swetz

Ida Ruth Swetz, 84, of Bonifay died Sept. 22. She served two years overseas in occupied Japan during WWII.

Swetz was a long-time member of Bonifay Garden Club where she served as president for many years. She also belonged to the Bonifay Woman's Club, and was a member of Bonifay First United Methodist Church and its choir. She was a world traveler, and was a volunteer at Holmes County Public Library.

Swetz was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Martin Swetz.

Survivors include a daughter, Theresa Deweese; stepdaughters, Patricia Staudter, Lucinda Prete and Joan Davis, and 10 grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Sept. 29 at First United Methodist Church of Bonifay.

Wages and Sons Stone Mountain Chapel, Stone Mountain, Ga., was in charge of arrangements.

Mary L. Capps

Mary L. Green Capps, 85, of Marianna died Sept. 26 at Jackson Hospital. She was a native and life-long resident of Jackson County.

A 1942 graduate of Malone High School, he was former owner of Green's Oyster Bar.

She was preceded in death by husbands, Hardy L. Green and James Capps, and a daughter, Martha Lou Green.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ann Carroll of Marianna; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside funeral services were held Sept. 29 at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Michael Petty officiating. James & Sikes, Maddox Chapel, was in charge of arrangements.
