“I’m saying this partly as your attorney and partly as a citizen of Holmes County,” said County Attorney Jeff Goodman. “I’ve worked for many counties and I can honestly say I’ve never worked for such a county as this. You all set the tempo for the meetings, having had your differences still being able to come together with resolve and leaving each meeting with the same camaraderie.”



Goodman said this is an example that could be taught to the next generation.



“I only hope that the next board comes together as peaceably as this one has,” said Goodman. “On behalf of me and my family I appreciate all you’ve done.”



Commissioner Monty Merchant also said it had been good.



“It’s been a pleasure,” said Merchant. “There’s a lot of years and experience that’s going to be missed.”



Commissioner Kenneth Williams also said that he enjoyed working with King and Music.



BOCC approved of the request Poplar Spring High School made through Merchant to pour cement for a tennis court over the Christmas holiday.



“They told me they were told by the Holmes County School District that they were on their own as far as paid labor is concerned,” said Williams. “As far as material, they’ve got it. They just need the labor.”



Chair Ron Monk said that he didn’t agree with helping.



“It just seems like a snowball affect,” said Monk. “The more we do, the more they ask and the bigger the tasks become. Where do we say ‘whoa’?”



Williams said they’ve “done more for others.”



“We should do it,” said King. “They’re all taxpayers after all.”



BOCC approved of upgrading their 200-gallon gas tanks to 500-gallon gas tanks.



BOCC also approved of what should be done about replacing the logos on the company vehicles with the new logo.



“We shouldn’t replace the old ones unless they need replacing, then we’ll replace then with the new logo,” said Merchant. “They same will be done for all new vehicles. That’s how we’ll get the new logo on all vehicles on an as needed basis.”



County Engineer Cliff Knauer gave an update that he was still searching out avenues to pay for the project of fixing Yancy Lane’s erosion problems.



BOCC had agreed with Merchants’ request to allow County Engineer Cliff Knauer to look into means of fixing the erosion problem on Yancy Lane during their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 30.



Residents and business owners Johnny and Sandra Johnson had came before the Board Tuesday, Oct. 30 requesting to place a vending area up on their property of business located on County Road 160 across from the Bethlehem School.



“It’s just going to be a sheltered area with vending machines housed in it,” said Johnny Johnson. “There’s one just like it in Graceville.”



He said their problem came with the Holmes County Health Department having issues with no bathrooms.



“It’s not going to be a store,” said Johnny. “It’s just going to be a place where vending machines are going to be located. The one in Graceville doesn’t have a bathroom either.”



The Board agreed to allow County Attorney Jeff Goodman to look into the matter and report back to the Board with his findings at the next meeting, on Nov. 13.



Goodman said due to the elections he had to put off contacting the health department’s director.



“I’ll get back with him personally,” said Goodman.



BOCC also approved of Consent Items: Minutes, Special Session Oct. 23, 2012, Regular Session Oct. 30, 2012; Budget Amendment 5 for 2011-2012; Panhandle Public Library Cooperative System board appointment; Modification 1 to Sub Grant Agreement 13-FG-86-02-42-01-097; and Interlocal Agreement Re-Authorizing the Workforce Development Consortium.



Swearing in of new Commissioners Bobby Sasnett and David Whitaker will be held at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20.



The next regularly scheduled meeting with the new commissioners will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27.
