CHIPLEY — On Oct. 18 at the Third Thursday meeting of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce, Chipley Garden Club member Edwina Showers awarded the City of Chipley’s Yard of the Month to 1276 Old Bonifay Road, the home of Yvette and Carroll Lerner.

The Lerners’ yard has been through several of changes with a major one being relocating their main entry from Main Street to Old Bonif ay Road.  Underneath the old Magnolia trees shady flower beds surrounded with recycled brick sport an assortment of shade-loving plants such as Coleus, Purple Queen Wandering Jew, Ryan’s Pink Chrysanthemums and hostas.

The carport has been repurposed as a quiet patio with potted Sago Palms and Boxwood hedges providing privacy from the roadway.

“It’s a nice place to just sit and swing and pass the time.” Yvette has been collecting heritage plants and scattered through the yard are several varieties of old roses, Crinum lilies, azaleas, and camellias. Many of the plants were collected from her grandmother and mother’s yards. A nice stand of Swamp Sunflowers runs along the white picket fence and the re-cycled blue glass bottle edging in the corner adds an extra touch of color.

Chipley Garden Club welcomes suggestions for Yard of the Month at any time.   Call Edwina Showers at 638-1777 and we’ll be glad to check it out.
