The Washington County Board of Commissioners heard recommendations from county engineer Cliff Knauer about how to address the Blue Pond Community Center on State Road 77 when they met in regular session Tuesday, Feb. 27.

The building, which is used by to host a variety of local events, has developed mold after sustaining damage during last summer's flooding - and is at risk for more damage if something isn't done, said Knauer.

"Your really need to raise the floor by 1.8 feet," he told commissioners. "But that's not possible. I don't think there's any way to do that."

"Another option is to strip it back down to a pole barn and call it an outside classroom. That would cost between $10,000 and $15,000."

Knauer said the building could be refurbished, but the estimated cost would fall at around $34,000.

"That would be to just strip, fix and re-do (the building)," he said. "Another option is to demolish the whole thing and build a new one up by the restrooms where's there's higher ground (to help avoid future flooding)."
